This is a letter I drafted concerning the Fairness Doctrine. Feel free to use it as a draft or as is. Just edit the Senator Representative part and add your name and address
To The Honorable,
Senator Representative
It is my hopes that you will sign on as a cosponsor and support any bills introduced that is intended to prevent the Federal Communications Commission from repromulgating the fairness doctrine. There are several bills right now that have been introduced in the House of Representatives and the House of Senate that are intended to do just this. H.R.226 Sponsor: Rep Pence, Mike [IN-6] (introduced 1/7/2009) Cosponsors (161)
S.34 Sponsor: Sen DeMint, Jim [SC] (introduced 1/6/2009) Cosponsors (28), and S.62 Sponsor: Sen Inhofe, James M. [OK] (introduced 1/6/2009) Cosponsors (None).
The Fairness Doctrine is nothing more than a Violation of the 1st Amendment to where government regulates the Freedom of speach by requiring, (and the key word here is requiring) that opposing views be allowed. If a newspaper, radio station, or any other publication wishes to allow opposing views then that should be their freedom. (Key word here is Freedom).
A Freedom is what is guaranteed under the Constitution. Once the above is forced (and the key word is forced) to broadcast, or publish an opposing view, then it is no longer a Freedom.
Forced and Freedom cannot exist in the same sense for they have opposite meanings.
You took an oath to uphold the Constitution. Since the Fairness Doctrine is clearly a violation of the 1st Amendment of the Constitution, I am sure that you would have no reservations in fighting the Fairness Doctrine, since I am sure that the oath you took, you took seriously.
Should you not agree with me, I hope that at your earliest opportunity you will respond to me, and explain your disagreement, and as to how it has Constitutional standing.
Sincerely,
Your Name
